The Oaks Care Home in Blyth, Northumberland, has been instructed to make significant improvements following a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The inspection revealed that some parts of the home, including several residents bedrooms, had unpleasant odors and that aspects of care were not consistently safe.
Two years ago, the home was already advised to make changes to meet safety regulations, yet the latest inspection found it was still not fully compliant. Hillcare, the organization managing the facility, expressed disappointment over the findings and stated that a comprehensive improvement plan has been implemented to address the issues.
The report highlighted concerns that allegations of abuse had not been reported promptly to local authorities. Additionally, risks associated with residents care, including nutrition, hydration, fall prevention, and pressure ulcer management, were not always properly assessed or documented.
Inspectors also identified problems with the administration of medicines and maintenance of medical equipment, noting that procedures were not always followed or kept up to date. Care home management confirmed these issues would be addressed immediately.
While the CQC noted that overall cleanliness had improved, some areas with damaged wood and paint made cleaning difficult, contributing to unpleasant smells in certain rooms. In response, Hillcare plans to install non-slip flooring in several carpeted rooms to improve hygiene and safety.
A spokesperson for Hillcare stated, An improvement plan was already in place during the inspection. Since then, we have collaborated closely with the local authority and the integrated care board to implement substantial changes. Our top priority continues to be providing a safe, comfortable, and caring environment for our residents.
