FDNY Firefighters' Families Enjoy Shopping Spree at FAO Schwarz: 'Event Provides Vital Support for Families'

The FDNY-Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows & Childrens Fund hosted its long-standing holiday shopping tradition at FAO Schwarz on Sunday, November 23. Families of New York City firefighters who have passed away were given the opportunity to shop with $200 gift cards each, meet Santa, and ride an FDNY fire truck around Rockefeller Center.

"This annual gathering has been a source of support for families who have faced immense loss," shared the FDNY-UFA, emphasizing the connection it fosters among participants.

The event has been celebrated for 35 years, allowing children of fallen firefighters to experience festive joy while creating lasting memories. Social media posts from the FDNY-UFA highlighted smiling families, children interacting with Santa, and the excitement of riding high above the city in a fire engine bucket.

Attendees were given exclusive access to FAO Schwarz, ensuring a private and meaningful shopping experience in honor of their late loved ones. Children were able to select gifts of their choice, enjoying the freedom and festive atmosphere provided by the event.

Participants shared personal reflections, including Charlotte, 6, who excitedly mentioned receiving a purse, and her brother Joseph, 8, who pointed out a firemans hat in the store representing his fathers engine. Teenagers like Juliette, whose father died from 9/11-related illness, noted the comfort of being surrounded by peers who understand their grief.

The association expressed gratitude to organizers, stating that the goal is to create lasting moments for families. FDNY-UFA President Andrew Ansbro noted that the event serves as a reminder to families that they are remembered and remain part of the FDNY community. Many older children who once attended as participants now return as volunteers, continuing the cycle of giving back.

Longtime attendee Eileen Bellew, whose husband perished in a 2005 Bronx fire, shared that her four children have volunteered at the event over the years, demonstrating how the tradition inspires generosity and community spirit.
