Fredrik Wikstrm Nicastro, founder of Hope Studios, is gaining attention in the global film industry for his dedication to uplifting narratives with strong intellectual property. After a long tenure at SF Studios, where he helped produce the Oscar-nominated Swedish film A Man Called Ove and its English remake A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks, Wikstrm Nicastro launched Hope Studios in 2023 with the goal of bringing inspiring, internationally appealing stories to life.
The studio has recently completed production on two ambitious independent films: Anxious People, featuring Angelina Jolie, Aimee Lou Wood, and Jason Segel, and The Night House, starring Aaron Paul and Jacob Tremblay. Despite industry challenges such as studio consolidation and slow-moving foreign presales, Wikstrm Nicastro remains optimistic about the future of cinema.
Im an eternal optimist, he shared from the set of Anxious People, the first film shot at Pinewoods Indie Film Hub in the UK. We aim to create stories that inspire hope and affirm humanity. Believing in a better future is a powerful thing.
Both films reflect the type of slate Hope Studios is buildingadaptations of literary works with an uplifting core. Anxious People is based on Fredrik Backmans New York Times Bestseller, following investment banker Zara (Jolie) as a hostage situation unfolds during an open house, blending humor with human connection. The film reunites much of the team from A Man Called Otto, including director Marc Forster and screenwriter David Magee. International sales are being handled by Black Bear, while Forsters 2DUX banner provided financing support.
The Night House is adapted from Jo Nesbs 2023 horror novel. The story follows high schooler Richard (Tremblay), who, after losing his parents, witnesses a bizarre disappearance via a prank phone call. The film, shot primarily in Spains Basque Country and the UK, was directed by Jesper Ganslandt and produced alongside horror veteran Steven Schneider. Wikstrm Nicastro emphasizes that the story, while a horror, carries social significance that aligns with the studios ethos.
Wikstrm Nicastro acknowledges current market difficulties, noting that U.S. buyers often delay commitments and production costs continue to rise. The marketplace is more defensive, but audiences still crave high-quality stories, he said. Our challenge is to meet those expectations, and that creates opportunities for studios like ours.
Before founding Hope Studios, Wikstrm Nicastro spent nearly two decades at SF Studios, producing films such as Snabba Cash (Easy Money), and spearheading the companys international expansion. This experience led to the successful English-language remake A Man Called Otto, which sold for a record $60M at the Berlin Film Market and earned $113M globally.
Hope Studios now operates from Sweden and London, leveraging European subsidy systems to optimize production costs. For example, The Night House benefited from Spains Basque Country rebate program, allowing a significant portion of the budget to qualify for a 60% rebate.
Looking ahead, the studio is developing multiple adaptations of internationally renowned authors, including Robin Sharmas The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. Wikstrm Nicastro emphasizes that Hope Studios will continue to focus exclusively on English-language projects with hopeful or inspiring themes. That is the core of our mission, and its reflected in the very name of the company. We are committed to this vision for the next decade and beyond.
