Following a public appeal at the beginning of November, the Guernsey Ambulance Service has seen a significant increase in subscribers. The service reported that an additional 400 residents have joined the annual subscription program, which costs 71 for adults and 33 for children.
Chief Ambulance Officer Mark Mapp emphasized the value of the subscriptions, noting that they provide coverage for medical services exceeding 15,000. He highlighted that dispatching an emergency ambulance amounts to 585, while using the Flying Christine ambulance boat for emergencies in Sark costs 2,420.
The service is operated on behalf of the States of Guernsey through funding from the Committee for Health and Social Care. St John, which runs the service as a charitable organization, relies on the subscription fees and other charges to cover remaining costs.
Mr. Mapp explained the importance of preparing for emergencies: "Although no one wants to think about needing an ambulance, our team responds to around 10,000 emergency and transport calls every year. Having a subscription ensures you are covered if the unexpected happens."
"While we hope you never need to use it, taking out a subscription provides peace of mind," he added. "You cant plan accidents, but you can plan for protection."
