A recent watchdog report indicates that several media outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch have misattributed rising electricity bills to clean energy initiatives, while evidence points to data centers as the primary driver of increased demand, according to Inside Climate News.
Findings from the Report
The analysis, conducted by Media Matters, reviewed op-eds and television segments from Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Post between August and October. The outlets frequently blamed New Jerseys renewable energy targetssuch as offshore wind projects, solar programs, and coal plant closuresfor higher electricity rates. However, officials and independent analysts emphasize that data centers are the main factor.
"The extreme hikes we are currently seeing are almost entirely attributable to data centers and their tremendous load," said Brian Lipman, director of the New Jersey Rate Counsel.
Renewables vs Traditional Energy Costs
While renewable energy infrastructure like solar and wind requires initial investment, it produces essentially free electricity over time with minimal maintenance. In contrast, traditional energy sourcesnuclear, coal, or gasrequire ongoing investment, staffing, maintenance, and fuel purchases, highlighting the long-term benefits of renewables beyond their environmental impact.
Data Center Demand Pressures
The regional grid operator PJM Interconnection projects that data centers will contribute approximately 30 gigawatts of additional demand in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states by 2030, equivalent to powering 20 million homes. As of November 12, over 1,330 projects totaling at least 100 gigawatts, mostly renewable, were pending grid connection approvals, exacerbating supply issues.
A separate study by Aurora Energy Research found that connecting just 10% of these stalled renewable projects by 2025 could have reduced capacity prices by 25%, emphasizing the supply-demand imbalance. Alex Ambrose of the New Jersey Policy Perspective stated, "The reason bills are going up is a simple supply and demand problem. PJM has not built enough supply while also not planning for an increase in demand from data centers."
Impact of Misleading Coverage
Incorrect media reporting can distort public understanding of pollution and renewable energy solutions. Past examples include advertorials funded by fossil fuel interests that blurred the line between journalism and corporate messaging. Whistleblower reports also indicate that oil and gas companies have historically influenced public perception through long-term messaging campaigns.
Misleading coverage is particularly concerning when households are financially strained. Accurate reporting and critical scrutiny of corporate statements are essential to prevent misinformation.
Actions and Accountability
Government oversight and independent media analysis play a crucial role in addressing misleading claims. New Jersey governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, who campaigned on an "affordability first" platform, challenged assertions linking renewable energy to higher rates, pointing instead to PJM delays as the core issue.
Consumers can also take steps to verify environmental claims by checking for supporting data and supporting companies investing in genuine clean energy initiatives, ensuring that responsible, fact-based practices are encouraged.
