Investment in German film sector by streaming services and broadcasters

Over the next five years, both public and private broadcasters, along with major streaming platforms, are set to inject a combined 15.5 billion ($18 billion) into Germany's film industry, according to government sources cited by dpa.

Among the investors are Germany's public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, alongside several private companies. Details on the allocation of these funds have not been disclosed.

Recently, Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer met with streaming giants Netflix, Disney, and Amazon to encourage greater investment in the German market. Following the discussions, Weimer described the expected influx as a "significant investment boost."

Weimer has dismissed the idea of mandatory investment quotas, pointing to potential legal challenges and complex procedures. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats, who are the junior partner in Germany's conservative-led coalition, have advocated for legally binding rules to ensure contributions.

Additionally, the German government plans to increase film subsidies starting in 2026. Earlier this year, Weimer and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil announced that funding for the two main government-backed film funds will rise to 250 million. When combined with other subsidy programs, total governmental support for the sector is projected to reach around 310 million.
