Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has recently revamped a Florida residence while his larger nearby mansion remains under construction, Realtor.com reports. The $87 million temporary estate now boasts extensive landscaping, featuring Brazilian beauty-leaf trees, Japanese yews, and gumbo-limbo trees. Planned additions include a sauna, spa, hot tub, fire pit, gym, and a poolside office.
According to the Daily Mail, almost every room in the home has been completely redesigned since Bezos purchased it in April 2024. The property is located in Indian Creek Village, an exclusive enclave known for its wealthy residents and use of public services to support private infrastructure. Critics have also pointed out that the community has received public funds for repairs to its private bridge.
The neighborhood features a private police force and a single entry point, ensuring high security and exclusivity. Reports suggest that Bezos benefited from approximately $1 billion in tax savings after relocating from Washington to Florida.
Environmental concerns have been raised over the impact of such extravagant homes. Studies highlight that the emissions from Bezos' private jets surpass what an average Amazon employee could generate in over two centuries. Large properties demand significant energy for cooling and maintenance, contributing to pollution. About 75% of Florida's electricity is generated from gas, intensifying climate-related risks such as floods and storms, which also drive up local insurance costs.
The renovations have sparked outrage on social media. Commenters expressed frustration at the scale of luxury while even larger projects are underway. One Facebook user wrote, "This should be illegal," while another remarked, "Thats what happens when you give tax cuts to billionaires."
