The impact of the Novichok attack on businesses

Lucy Beck highlighted that the Novichok poisonings prompted a shift in how businesses approach their operations.

More than seven years after the 2018 Novichok attacks, local businesses in Salisbury report a positive outlook for the future. This comes alongside an inquiry into the death of Dawn Sturgess, who succumbed to the nerve agent, concluding that Russian President Vladimir Putin acted with "astonishing recklessness" and holds "moral responsibility" for her death.

Lucy Beck, director of Salisbury's Chamber of Commerce, explained that businesses learned valuable lessons during the crisis. After suffering a significant impact on nightlife and retail sectors, the local economy has now regained momentum and is thriving.

Beck noted, "Salisbury is a lively city, but like many cities of its size, we face challenges from online competition."

Dawn Sturgess passed away three months following the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the same incident. The inquiry into the events lasted seven weeks and thoroughly examined the circumstances surrounding the poisonings.

Rachel Tribbeck, who works at a family-owned jewellers in Salisbury that has been operating since 1905, recalled the unprecedented disruption caused by the poisonings. At the time, foot traffic dropped sharply as parts of the city were decontaminated and visitors avoided the area, with tour buses rerouted to Bath.

Tribbeck reflected, "It was a very difficult period. People were afraid to come into Salisbury. Now the city is vibrant again, offering much to visitors, and the community is very supportive."

Jayne Prigent, owner of multiple Jas Hair Group salons in Salisbury, described the city as being almost deserted immediately after the news broke. "It felt like a ghost town overnight," she said. Despite this, local business owners united to support one another, helping the community endure the crisis and continue operating.

Today, Salisbury's businesses are recovering strongly, with the city regaining its dynamic energy and resilience following the Novichok incident.
