During a conversation with BlazeTV, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy voiced his concerns over the typical snack offerings on commercial flights. According to Reuters, Duffy believes that providing healthier options could enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
I would appreciate better snacks. Something healthier while flying would be great, Duffy stated. It might make a real difference. Instead of the high-calorie cookies loaded with butter and sugar, or the small pretzel packs, why not consider something better?
Critique of Standard Airline Snacks
Secretary Duffy specifically criticized the usual complimentary items like cookies and pretzels, calling them poor nutritional choices. He encouraged airlines to align with national health initiatives, saying, Airlines could support a healthier approach too. Can we have a nutritious option onboard?
Currently, many airlines offer snacks such as Biscoff cookies, Stroopwafels, Cheez-Its, Sun Chips, and granola bars. Some carriers provide additional items for purchase, including nuts or fresh fruit, but standard complimentary snacks tend to be processed and shelf-stable, according to Yahoo News.
Connection to Civility Campaign
Duffys remarks on airplane snacks coincide with his recent campaign promoting more polite and considerate behavior among travelers. He emphasized the importance of respectful conduct and appearance during flights: I want to start a conversation encouraging everyone to be their best selves while traveling. Lets dress neatly, be courteous, and use basic manners like please and thank you.
The Transportation Secretary also noted that casual attire might sometimes lead to less respectful interactions. When people dont dress appropriately, it can affect how they treat others, Duffy explained.
