Warm Welcome hubs provide an 'essential' helping hand

Residents facing rising heating costs and financial challenges are being invited to access a network of "Warm Welcome" hubs during the colder months. Over 20 locations across North Tyneside, including community centers, libraries, and churches, are participating in the initiative, offering free food and beverages alongside a variety of activities.

The Meadows community centre in North Shields is part of the program, hosting sessions every Thursday from 12:00 to 14:30 GMT.

Support worker Jen Buchanan emphasizes the importance of the hubs, especially during this time of year. She explains, "Everyone is welcomethere are no restrictions. People can enjoy a hot meal, meet new friends, or simply charge their devices. We also organize craft activities to encourage participation and reduce any stigma around coming in for food. Increasing attendance highlights how essential these hubs are."

In addition to providing immediate support, the hubs can guide visitors toward longer-term assistance for issues such as heating costs, income support, or skills development. Buchanan adds, "We have a crisis fund for emergencies, can help with gas and electricity, and refer people to groups that address ongoing challenges. Weve even helped someone get new shoes when theirs were soaked."

The initiative is funded by North Tyneside Council's Household Support Fund, which is part of broader efforts to alleviate cost-of-living pressures in the area. A full list of participating locations is available on the council's website.
