Work-related stress in teaching is a significant issue.

A prominent politician has highlighted that various elements influence the wellbeing of teachers in Guernsey, following a survey in Jersey which revealed high levels of dissatisfaction within the profession. Paul Montague, President of Education, stated that although Guernsey may be better positioned than other areas of the UK, the problem of work-related stress among teachers requires attention, calling it "a serious concern."

The Jersey governments Schools and Colleges Survey indicated that 62% of teachers had contemplated leaving their positions in the past year. In response, Montague said, "I have supported many colleagues experiencing work-related stress, and we do see a significant number of these cases."

He emphasized that teaching is an inherently demanding role, and absences due to stress increase pressure on remaining staff. "It's essential we provide proper care for our employees. Regular, meaningful check-ins through line management meetings are crucial to prevent issues from escalating to the point where staff need time off," he added.

Montague praised the dedication of Guernsey teachers, saying, "Our educators work extremely hard, and we are very fortunate to have such committed staff." He noted that teachers can handle high pressure when their work environment provides appropriate support.

"Creating strong communities within schools allows the ethos to flourish, which will lead to progress," he explained, emphasizing the importance of supportive school environments for staff wellbeing.
