Marina's sole intention is to promote investment

The team behind a proposed marina in northern Isle of Man insists their project is essential to drive investment into the town.
Ramsey Marina Ltd (RML) first announced plans in 2019 for a 400-berth marina and yacht club, including space for residential and commercial development. However, Lawrie Hooper MHK is preparing a bill to ban any construction on South Beach, the intended site for the marina.
RML member Robin Bromley-Martin emphasized that Ramsey needs "a major boost to trigger urban regeneration," and described the marina project as "the only way to accomplish that." According to RML calculations, the town requires 150 million in private investment to fund urban renewal and improved flood defenses, which the proposed maritime complex could help secure.
Last month, Tynwald rejected a development plan for the island's north and west, leaving future projects on South Beach uncertain. Hooper criticized the marina plans as unrealistic, citing ongoing local concerns about the proposal.
In response, Ramsey Marina Ltd dismissed claims that the development would harm South Beachs marine habitat, a protected nature reserve. The EVMC highlighted that the project could "revitalize and restore" the seabed while supporting oyster cultivation beneath the marina.
The developers also stressed the economic benefits, projecting around 800 direct and indirect jobs, alongside improved sea defenses for Ramsey, which currently suffers from a deteriorating seawall.
Bromley-Martin reiterated that the plans would foster growth, generate employment, and safeguard the marine environment at South Beach.
Hooper has indicated that, if permitted, he aims to introduce the bill to prevent development in South Beach to the House of Keys by early next year. Meanwhile, the EVMC urges politicians to consider the marinas potential benefits before making a decision.
"RML should be allowed to present its proposals and argue its case, allowing Tynwald to vote on the merits rather than restricting RMLs democratic right to be heard," the group said.
