A Must-Watch Fantasy TV Series on Prime Video for Dungeons & Dragons Fans

What began as a casual Dungeons & Dragons session with voice actors streaming online has grown into the expansive world of Critical Role. This phenomenon, created by Dungeon Master Matt Mercer, has given rise to a massive fanbase and multiple spin-offs, including an animated series now available on Prime Video.

The latest series, The Mighty Nein, adapts the second Critical Role campaign. D&D fans will find it especially engaging, as it broadens the universe of Exandria, taking viewers to new and fascinating locations. The story follows a seven-member adventuring group drawn into the conflict between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty.

The team includes:

  • Yasha Nydoorin, an aasimar barbarian (voiced by Ashley Johnson)
  • Mollymauk Tealeaf, a tiefling blood hunter (Taliesin Jaffe)
  • Beauregard Lionett, a human monk (Marisha Ray)
  • Jester Lavorre, a tiefling cleric (Laura Bailey)
  • Fjord, a half-orc warlock/paladin (Travis Willingham)
  • Caleb Widogast, a human wizard (Liam O'Brien)
  • Revvetha "Veth" Brenatto, a halfling rogue/wizard (Sam Riegel)

Veth was formerly known as Nott the Brave, a goblin form resulting from a magical curse. Even longtime Critical Role fans will find surprises in The Mighty Nein, as the series sometimes diverges from the original campaign, including unexpected character deaths.

Viewers curious about the teams fate or the story changes from the original game can also revisit a previous animated series on Prime Video.

Previous Critical Role Series: The Legend of Vox Machina

Before The Mighty Nein, Prime Video released The Legend of Vox Machina, based on the first Critical Role campaign. This series explores another corner of Exandria with a fresh set of characters voiced by the same actors, giving a sense of continuity.

In this story, a newly-formed mercenary group sets out to investigate who is damaging farmland in the Republic of Tal'Dorei. Despite initial hesitation from the Tal'Dorei Council, the team persistently works to solve the mystery and eventually triumphs. Across three seasons, the show adapts many key moments from the original campaign, providing fans with detailed visual storytelling.

The series has received critical acclaim, holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is slated to continue for at least two more seasons, likely concluding around 2027 or 2028. Together with The Mighty Nein, Prime Video offers an ongoing collection of D&D-inspired adventures for viewers to enjoy.
