Ben Stiller and Others Rally Behind Paul Dano After Quentin Tarantino Criticizes Him as the 'Weakest Male Actor'

Following Quentin Tarantino's recent remarks labeling Paul Dano as "the weakest male actor," several prominent Hollywood figures have come forward to support the actor. Ben Stiller, Simu Liu, Alec Baldwin, and director Matt Reeves have all praised Dano for his talent and professionalism.

On a podcast, Tarantino described Dano's performance in the 2007 film There Will Be Blood as a "non-entity," calling it a major flaw in what he otherwise considers one of his favorite films of the 21st century. He added that the movie might have reached even greater heights without Dano in the cast, suggesting that Austin Butler would have been a better choice.

In response, Matt Reeves, who directed Dano in 2022's The Batman, wrote, "Paul Dano is an incredible actor, and an incredible person." Ben Stiller added, "Paul Dano is f------- brilliant," while Simu Liu commented, "idk man I think Paul Dano is an incredible actor." Alec Baldwin shared a short video on Instagram expressing his admiration, saying, "I just want to say I love Paul Dano. And if you don't love Paul Dano, shh."

Colleen Foy, who acted alongside Dano in There Will Be Blood, also defended him, stating that his performance "speaks for itself." Foy recalled sitting behind Tarantino during a screening and observing him enjoying Dano's work, suggesting that his recent criticism contradicts his earlier reactions. Actor Josh Gad weighed in as well, calling Dano "one of the best actors of our time. Full stop."

Maya Rudolph shared a photo of Dano with Daniel Day-Lewis from the film on her Instagram Stories, highlighting their memorable on-screen partnership, though she did not comment directly on Tarantino's critique.

In There Will Be Blood, Dano played preacher Eli opposite Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning portrayal of oil tycoon Daniel Plainview, under the direction of Paul Thomas Anderson. Despite Tarantino's harsh assessment, the support from his peers emphasizes Dano's respected standing in the acting community.
