Saudi Arabia has introduced a major new filmmaking destination with the inauguration of PlayMaker Studios, a cutting-edge production complex situated in Qiddiya City, just outside Riyadh. The opening coincides with the pre-production of Unbroken Sword, a historical action epic helmed by Alik Sakharov, known for his work on Game of Thrones and House of Cards. This will be the first project filmed at the newly launched facility.
The movie, produced by Sela and backed by the General Entertainment Authority and Riyadh Season, is scheduled to begin principal photography in early 2026. Over 200 crew members are already preparing to take advantage of PlayMakers modern soundstages and the dramatic Tuwaiq Mountains, which provide a stunning natural backdrop on the edge of the desert.
Spanning more than 50 acres, PlayMaker Studios includes two custom-built soundstages, comprehensive workshops and production spaces, modern office areas, backlots, and on-site facilities. Construction is underway on two additional stages expected to be completed in 2026, expanding the studios ability to host multiple international projects. Future plans also include dedicated postproduction, VFX, and music studios, reinforcing the complex as a central component of Qiddiya Citys entertainment ecosystem.
Qiddiya City is an ambitious entertainment and lifestyle megaproject located approximately 45 miles southwest of Riyadh. Designed to become Saudi Arabias premier city of play, it will cover over 140 square miles and feature theme parks, sports venues, resorts, cultural centers, residential areas, and entertainment facilities, all as part of the countrys Vision 2030 development initiative.
Abdullah Aldawood, managing director of Qiddiya Investment Company, stated, PlayMaker Studios is a key part of Qiddiya Citys vision and reflects Saudi Arabias growing achievements in the creative industries. It is a significant step in establishing a world-class destination where innovation, culture, and entertainment converge.
Producer Richard Sharkey (known for House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings franchise) overseeing Unbroken Sword commented, Being the first production at this studio is both an honor and a responsibility. The scale, support, and ambition at Qiddiya City are extraordinary, and the Tuwaiq Mountains provide a cinematic canvas unmatched anywhere else.
PlayMaker Studios adds to Saudi Arabias growing network of film and television hubs, alongside AlUla Studios, NEOMs Media Village, and Bajdah Desert Studios, contributing to the Kingdoms goal of becoming a leading regional and global production center. Despite the rapid development, attracting experienced crew remains a challenge. Saudi Arabia offers one of the worlds most competitive incentives, with a 40 percent cash rebate on eligible production expenses.
The studios launch was announced during the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, reinforcing Saudi Arabias efforts to position itself as a prominent entertainment hub in the Middle East.
