At the 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival in China, jury president Marco Mller encouraged both audiences and film professionals to reconsider the events timing. He highlighted that the festivals placement between AFM in November and the Berlin Film Festival in February offers a rare opportunity to showcase films set to make waves in the coming year, rather than merely reviewing the past years releases.
Mller acknowledged the challenges faced by a young festival amid a crowded global film calendar. Speaking at a press conference to introduce the festival jury for the Golden Coconut Award, he reframed the late-year schedule as the festivals strategic strength. The timing is particularly important, Mller noted. Hainans schedule allows media-savvy and film-enthusiastic audiences to experience films that are about to premiere in the upcoming year.
Other jury members also reflected the festivals evolving balance between domestic focus and international ambition. When asked about Asian-American representation in Hollywood, documentary juror Renee Tajima-Pea referenced historical marginalization in the industry and stressed the importance of telling stories rooted in China and the Chinese diaspora. Many of our stories are anchored here and in our broader communities, and we are eager to share them, she said.
The press conference highlighted current trends in Chinas film industry, including cautious investment, longer distribution cycles, and fewer scripts entering production. Veteran actor Guo Tao emphasized the need for a balance between commercial success and artistic integrity. The market needs filmmakers who prioritize storytelling while also delivering successful box office results, Guo explained.
The festival also served as a platform for cultural exchange, celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand through collaborative events. Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun noted the strong cultural ties and shared cinematic interests between the two nations.
While Hollywood blockbusters like Avatar: Fire and Ash dominated festival advertising, Argentine filmmaker Mariano Llins promoted the value of smaller, more personal productions. Advocating for intimate filmmaking driven by collaboration rather than industry systems, Llins emphasized the deeper connection created when films are made by close-knit teams. Creating films with friends allows for a more personal approach to cinema, he said. Small projects often belong to you in a deeper way.
Overall, the Hainan Island International Film Festival positioned itself as a forward-looking event, celebrating new talent, fostering cultural dialogue, and offering a platform for innovative cinema set to define the year ahead.
