During a recent Brooklyn screening of the 1989 classic Say Anything, John Cusack opened up about his views on sequels and modern cinema. The 59-year-old actor revealed there is only one film in his career he would consider revisiting.
"I was fortunate that I never felt the urge, and no one ever asked me to do sequels," Cusack admitted. "There is one that I think could be interesting to return to, and thats 1408. Honestly, today, most movies just dont impress me," he said, laughing to the audience.
1408, released in 2007, is a psychological horror film based on a Stephen King short story. Cusack starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Tony Shalhoub as Mike Enslin, a skeptic investigating the infamous haunted room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel. Despite his openness to revisiting the role, Cusack noted that no plans for a sequel to Say Anything have ever been discussed with director Cameron Crowe.
The actor emphasized his enduring appreciation for psychological thrillers. "The horror-psychological genre, that kind of Rod Serling style, still holds up. If you can create something in that vein, its genuinely fun," he explained.
Cusack also shared a memorable interaction with Crowe during the filming of Say Anything, which the director recounted in his memoir The Uncool. Crowe recalled how Cusack encouraged him to fully support his actors and create a focused, collaborative set environment. "He told me, When I finish a take, I want to see us locked in together, just the actor and me. Thats how it should be, Crowe said. This advice shaped how Crowe approaches his projects, keeping actors at the center of the creative process.
