Actor Harry Hamlin, 74, has opened up about a disturbing experience from his college days when he briefly served time in jail. During a recent episode of the podcast Let's Not Talk About the Husband, hosted by Hamlin and his wife Lisa Rinna, he recounted being allegedly "forced" to smoke phencyclidine (PCP), a powerful hallucinogenic drug, while incarcerated in 1970.
"Ive never tried ketamine, but in jail, I was made to smoke PCP," Hamlin stated, describing how the experience left him "so stoned" and "completely messed up."
The L.A. Law star explained that his arrest occurred after he was caught with a small amount of marijuana and a number of pills provided to him by an upperclassman. The pills, which Hamlin said were "speed" intended to aid with exams, had been given to him to deliver to another fraternity. When the other fraternity refused the pills, Hamlin kept them in his guitar case while traveling back to college, which ultimately led to his arrest.
Hamlin recounted that he was sentenced to 18 days in county jail, which he served only on weekends. On his first day, he was placed in a holding cell with a fellow student who had been arrested for LSD possession. After the student was released, Hamlin was transferred to a cell with more serious offenders, including felons and murderers.
He described the surreal experience of seeing inmates casually smoking a joint despite being behind bars. The following morning, Hamlin said a fellow inmate offered him what appeared to be a joint, and after refusing several times, he eventually complied. "Somebody had brought in a little sack of rolling tobacco soaked in PCP," Hamlin said. "They made me take three or four hits, and I was completely messed up."
Reflecting on the incident, Hamlin emphasized how intense and disorienting the experience was, marking it as a pivotal and unsettling moment from his youth.
