Margot Robbie acknowledges backlash over 'Wuthering Heights' casting: "I understand"

Margot Robbie has spoken out about the controversy surrounding her and Jacob Elordis casting in Emerald Fennells adaptation of Wuthering Heights. In a recent interview, the actress shared why she understands the audiences reactions to their roles.

I understand, Robbie told British Vogue. Theres nothing to judge until people actually see the film.

The movie is a loose adaptation of Emily Bronts 1847 novel, in which Catherine is portrayed as a brunette teenager. Robbie, who is 35 and naturally blonde, faced criticism when the first trailer was released. Similarly, some viewers questioned Elordis casting as Heathcliff, a character originally described as dark-skinned in the novel.

Robbie defended her co-star, saying, I watched him portray Heathcliff, and he is Heathcliff. Just wait and see. Hes part of a lineage of incredible actors who have taken on this role, from Laurence Olivier to Richard Burton, Ralph Fiennes, and Tom Hardy. Being part of that legacy is special. Hes extraordinary, and I have so much faith in him. I truly think hes our generations Daniel Day-Lewis.

Emerald Fennell also explained her choice of Robbie for the role, describing Catherine as a star, willful, provocative, and cruel in a way that captivates. Fennell added, It was about finding someone audiences would forgive while still being fascinated by her. Margot has that commanding presence that Catherine needs.

Wuthering Heights is set to premiere in theaters on February 13, 2026.
