"Matlock" keeps fans wondering about Billy's departure following David Del Rio's dismissal for sexual assault claim from colleague

David Del Rio appeared in the latest episode of Matlock without any clues about what lies ahead for his character, Billy Martinez. The actor was removed from the show after CBS investigated an incident involving him, but it remains unclear which episode will ultimately mark his final appearance.

In the December 4 episode, titled "Prior Bad Acts," Billy continued in his usual supporting role, helping Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) with the weekly case and advising his friend Sarah (Leah Lewis), who carried out some minor office tasks for the firms head, Howard "Senior" Markston (Beau Bridges). Del Rios character had only a few lines across several scenes, and there were no signs hinting at his impending departure from the series.

Reports indicate that after Del Rio's dismissal, the Matlock team planned to write out Billy rather than recast the role. The show had also taken a scheduled break in October and November following production on the first half of season two.

In the previous episode, "Harm Reduction," Billy was nervously preparing to propose a second time to his pregnant girlfriend, Claudia (Bella Ortiz), after their initial engagement in season one ended abruptly. Following a case involving a convent, Billy shared a pivotal moment with Claudia. Despite her expressing that marriage was not important to her, Billy insisted he wanted to marry her, and Claudia responded with relief and joy. The scene left viewers puzzled about the timing of her reaction, possibly due to post-production edits during Del Rios final filming days.

As the scene concluded, Billy added, "We were always meant to be a family," emphasizing the couples connection despite the uncertain future of his character.

Del Rio was a main cast member in season one and was expected to remain a key supporting character in season two. However, CBS launched an investigation in October after receiving a report involving the actor, ultimately resulting in his departure. Deadline reported that the allegation involved sexual misconduct with co-star Leah Lewis. Neither Del Rio nor Lewis has publicly addressed the matter, though Lewis shared a brief statement emphasizing strength and moving forward after news of his exit.

Lewis has since returned to filming, posting on social media: "And we back up and running." Matlock continues to air at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
