Megyn Kelly appears to be echoing the stance of Nancy Mace. On her SiriusXM program Monday, the conservative commentator expressed that she believes the U.S. military was overly lenient during the September 2 airstrike on an alleged drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean. She also criticized the two survivors, who were later killed in a follow-up strike, as having been treated too gently.
Kelly, speaking on her show in Sugar Land, Texas, on October 23, 2025, said she wished the two survivors had suffered more. She described a scenario in which President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth would inflict prolonged harm on the alleged Venezuelan traffickers, even suggesting severe injuries.
She elaborated, saying she found it hard to sympathize with individuals who had narrowly survived the initial strike but were ultimately killed in the water. Her comments drew sharp criticism on social media, with some calling her a soulless ghoul and accusing her of promoting war crimes.
The Trump administration has maintained that the targeted vessel was attempting to smuggle drugs into the United States and was filled with dangerous Venezuelan narco-terrorists. However, a recent report by the Washington Post raised questions about the operation. According to the article, after the first missile hit, drone footage revealed two survivors clinging to debris. A Special Operations commander reportedly ordered a second strike on Hegseths instructions, aiming to kill the remaining individuals.
One source told the Post, The order was to kill everybody. Trump later defended Hegseth, saying he believed the secretary had not given such an order.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense Law of War Manual, killing survivors of a destroyed vessel constitutes a war crime. The manual explicitly states that attacking people in a helpless statedue to injury, illness, or shipwreckis both dishonorable and inhumane.
During her broadcast, Kelly acknowledged that the military should not commit war crimes, but she criticized the scrutiny surrounding the incident as politically motivated, claiming it was aimed at members of Congress labeled the Seditious Six for posting a video urging troops to refuse unlawful orders. She also dismissed the broader concern about drug smugglers bringing fentanyl into the U.S., framing it as secondary to her political argument.
