Pelicans' Kevon Looney discloses true motivation for departing Warriors in free agency

Kevon Looney carries years of unforgettable memories with the Golden State Warriors. The 29-year-old center played a key role in multiple championship runs, helping the team secure three titles and earning fans admiration for his relentless effort on both ends of the court.

Following the 2024-25 season, Looney signed a two-year contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, marking the end of his decade-long tenure in Golden State. Ahead of facing his former team on Saturday, the three-time NBA champion shared his perspective on why he decided to move on.

"Coach Steve Kerr constantly adjusts lineups, and sometimes you have to wait for your chance," Looney explained. "He does this for everyone because his priority is winning. That can be frustrating at times, but I understand his approach and what hes trying to achieve."

"As a player, you want to step on the floor and make a difference. That was my main motivation. There are no hard feelingsten years with the team gave me so many great memories."

"There were moments when I might not have earned the chance, yet the coaching staff put me out there, so it all balances out. More good times than bad, for sure."

Looneys playing time during the 2024-25 season fell short of what the 6-foot-9 veteran was accustomed to. After averaging 23.9 minutes per game just three seasons ago, he saw only 15.0 minutes per game in his final year with the Warriors, which contributed to the sense that a separation was inevitable.

While not the most versatile big man on the roster, Looneys role was reduced due to Kerr favoring small-ball lineups. Averaging 4.5 points and 6.1 rebounds, he still made key contributions but his impact on the court had lessened compared to previous seasons.

Leaving a team after ten years is never easy, yet Looney can take comfort in the lasting respect from both the Warriors organization and their supporters.
