Pharrell Williams was honored with the Shoe of the Year award at the 2025 Footwear News Achievement Awards, held at Cipriani 25 Broadway in New York City on December 3, 2025. The award was presented by Pusha T.
In his acceptance speech, Pharrell opened up about his early life in Virginia, describing a childhood marked by instability and hardship. "You dont know what I know. You havent seen what I saw. No, you havent been where I go. Im from the mud," he stated. He shared memories of repeated evictions, having utilities cut off, and even having to pump his own water. Pharrell recalled not owning a name-brand sneaker until he earned his first paycheck from McDonalds at 16.
He linked his personal journey to the broader struggles faced by Black and brown communities in America. This connection fueled the creation of his Black Ambition initiative, which has now distributed $85 million to startups founded by Black and brown entrepreneurs.
"Im proletariat," Pharrell admitted, further describing himself as "lumpenproletariat," referencing Marxist social theory. He reflected on the perseverance required by previous generations: "I had to stay on my feet. But I could never walk in the shoes of my parents' parents' parents all they had to endure while staying on their feet. Or my ancestors, who arrived as captives, enslaved, who had no shoes, yet had to stay on their feet as they landed on the shores of Virginia."
Pharrell also addressed past criticism over his political frustrations, clarifying that his statements were a response to backlash against DEI initiatives. "Yes, I got frustrated, and the sound biters, they caught me lacking," he explained. "I will never stop fighting. I will never stop raising money to help level the playing field. Never."
