Publisher of 'Franklin the Turtle' condemns Hegseth's 'violent' post with beloved turtle

The team behind the beloved "Franklin the Turtle" children's books reacted on Monday after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared a graphic image of the character on X.

The post depicted Franklin wearing U.S. military gear, firing at boats from a helicopter, with the caption "Franklin Targets Narco Terrorists." Hegseth shared it on Sunday, adding, "For your Christmas wish list."

Following the post, criticism quickly emerged, including from the series publisher. Kids Can Press stated online, Franklin the Turtle is a cherished Canadian figure who has inspired generations of children and embodies kindness, empathy, and inclusivity. We strongly oppose any violent, demeaning, or unauthorized use of Franklins image or name, which contradicts these values.

Representative Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.) also responded. She reposted the image, replacing the original caption with "is a war criminal," writing, I fixed it for you.

This exchange comes amid allegations that Hegseth ordered a lethal strike on a Caribbean boat suspected of drug smuggling on September 2, which allegedly killed survivors in a subsequent attack. Hegseth has denied wrongdoing, though the White House confirmed that a second strike was authorized.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated Monday that the Navy admiral who directed the follow-up attack acted legally and within his authority, aiming to neutralize the vessel and eliminate the threat to the United States.

Recent strikes in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific targeting suspected drug-smuggling boats under the Trump administration have resulted in over 80 deaths. Lawmakers have raised concerns over executive authority and adherence to international law, prompting congressional reviews of the operations.
