Simon Cowell Acknowledges He Behaved Badly on American Idol

Simon Cowell has opened up about his early tenure as a judge on American Idol, admitting that his critiques could be excessively harsh. In a recent interview, the music mogul acknowledged that he sometimes came across as a d*** during auditions.

Speaking with The New York Times ahead of the launch of his new Netflix series, Cowell reflected on the reputation he built in the early seasons. He confessed that some of his remarks toward contestants went too far, explaining, I wasnt trying to be a d on purpose.

He emphasized that his primary goal was discovering artists with the potential to succeed in the music industry. Cowell stated, All I wanted with these shows was to find successful artists to sign to the label. So when all these people were coming in and they couldnt sing, we would say after 10 seconds, You cant sing. Not, Youre going to be brilliant.

The producer also recalled the long audition days often left him irritable, and it was these moments that the show highlighted the most. Theyre always going to use me in a bad mood. I got that. What can I say? Im sorry, he said.

Cowell admitted that he has apologized for some of his harsher comments and acknowledged he is not proud of certain interactions. He reflected, When I hear about these clips, Im like, Oh, God. But then again, the upside is that it made the shows really popular worldwide.

His candid remarks come as he prepares to release his Netflix series, Simon Cowell: The Next Act, which premieres on December 10.
