Sydney Sweeney Clarifies Her Quietness Following American Eagle Ad Controversy

Sydney Sweeney is opening up about the criticism surrounding her recent American Eagle campaign. The Euphoria star, who appeared in a denim advertisement that used the word "jeans" as a pun on genetic "genes," faced widespread backlash. She has now shared why she initially stayed quiet, expressing regret for not addressing the situation sooner.

"Anyone who knows me understands that I aim to bring people together," Sweeney told People in an interview published on December 5. "I oppose hate and division. In the past, I chose not to respond to any press, positive or negative, but Ive realized that my silence on this issue has only deepened the divide. I hope the coming year encourages more focus on what unites us rather than what separates us."

At 28, Sweeney admitted being caught off guard by the negative response to the campaign, clarifying that the controversy does not represent her personal beliefs. "I dont support the interpretations some attached to the campaign," she explained. "Many assigned motives and labels to me that simply arent true."

Previously, Sweeney spoke about the strong reactions to the campaign in November, defending her involvement. "I did a jean ad," she told GQ. "The reaction was surprising, but I love jeans. Theyre my everyday wearjeans and a T-shirt." Despite the criticism, she maintained that it didnt shake her perspective, noting, "I knew what the ad was for, and it was just about great jeans."
