Sydney Sweeney acknowledged that her decision to stay silent intensified the backlash surrounding her American Eagle jeans campaign. The 28-year-old American actress, known for her performances in Euphoria and The White Lotus, faced criticism for a commercial that used the tagline Sydney Sweeney has Great Jeans, playing on the word genes. Critics argued the ad perpetuated sexist stereotypes by emphasizing the actresss physique while she remarked that the jeans make your butt look amazing.
Speaking to People magazine, Sweeney admitted that not responding publicly contributed to the controversy. She explained, I was honestly surprised by the reaction. I did it because I love the jeans and the brand. I dont support the interpretations some people attached to the campaign. Many have attributed motives to me that simply arent accurate. Anyone who knows me knows I aim to bring people together and oppose hate and divisiveness.
She added, Previously, Ive chosen not to comment on media coverage, positive or negative, but I now see that my silence only widened the gap. I hope the new year encourages more focus on our commonalities rather than our differences.
When the advert launched in July, Sweeney explained: Genes are passed from parents to offspring, often influencing traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue. The campaign, designed to raise awareness of domestic violence, sparked debate across the political spectrum, drawing reactions even from former US President Donald Trump. He wrote on social media: Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. Well continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence. Great jeans look good on everyone.
Sweeney, reportedly a registered Republican, described the presidential comment as surreal. She previously faced criticism in November for not addressing the controversy during a GQ interview, stating, I did a jean ad. The reaction was surprising, but I love jeans. I live in jeans and a T-shirt every day.
