Amanda Seyfried celebrated her 40th birthday with an unexpected live surprise on NBC's Today show. The actress appeared on the program on Wednesday, December 3, alongside Sydney Sweeney to discuss their upcoming film, The Housemaid.
During the interview, co-host Willie Geist mentioned Seyfrieds birthday and hinted at a special treat. Moments later, Al Roker presented a birthday cake, prompting a cheerful exchange between the hosts and Seyfried. First of many. Happy Birthday! Roker exclaimed as they shared cheek kisses with the actress.
The surprises continued when Geist revealed that one of Seyfrieds close friends from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was on the line. To Seyfrieds astonishment, the caller was none other than Cher, who portrayed Ruby, Sophies grandmother, in the 2018 film.
Hey, babe! How are you? Cher greeted, leaving Seyfried momentarily speechless. Im better now. I miss you! Cher added, joking about the early hour but expressing her affection for the show. Although the call experienced brief technical difficulties, Cher attempted to sing Happy Birthday, but mentioned her voice wasnt at its best due to a recent doctor visit. Seyfried reassured her, saying she sounded pretty damn good. Cher concluded the call with warm birthday wishes before hanging up.
The interaction highlighted their memorable connection from the Mamma Mia! sequel, which followed Sophies journey to reopen her familys Greek island hotel while exploring her mother Donnas past and her three potential fathers.
During the show, Geist also inquired if Seyfried would be interested in collaborating again with Sweeney on a possible third installment of the musical franchise. Seyfried responded enthusiastically, calling the idea a dream and ready to start planning.
The Housemaid hits theaters on Friday, December 19.
