As Fallout returns for its second season, Walton Goggins highlights the striking real-world parallels within the video game-inspired series. Having delved deeply into Cooper Howards backstory before he transforms into The Ghoul, the three-time Emmy nominee told Deadline that the character embodies a reflection of all of us in a world teetering on the brink of nuclear conflict.
Goggins explains, He has no control over the information coming his way and is forced to comprehend in real time that the world he thought he knew no longer exists. Theres a chaotic bent to the reality he inhabits, and hes just like anyone else trying to make sense of the senseless.
He adds, The show doesnt push political messages overtly. Instead, it intertwines the narrative with the current global climate, relying on timing rather than preaching. We present it with absurdity, satire, and tangible consequences.
In the future timeline, The Ghoul journeys to New Vegas alongside Lucy MacLean, played by Ella Purnell, searching for his family. Meanwhile, Coopers past reveals the events leading to the nuclear conspiracy that caused civilizations collapse and shaped the current dystopian reality.
Reflecting on the series themes, Goggins cites co-star Aaron Moten, saying, Everyone in this show wants to change the world, but their approaches differ. That tension defines the story.
He elaborates, The series acts as a lens for understanding the world of Fallout and its game origins. Multiple factions clash, much like todays societies, each with their own vision of solutions. Cooper, or The Ghoul, stands apart as a lone figure, motivated by family, while others attempt to reconstruct society in their own image.
Season 2 of Fallout premieres on Prime Video on December 17, with new episodes streaming every Wednesday.
