Bilaal Salaam has filed a civil lawsuit claiming that actress Jada Pinkett Smith threatened him with physical harm if he continued to disclose her private matters. Salaam, who describes himself as a longtime friend of Will Smith, also accuses Pinkett Smith of orchestrating a media campaign against him in retaliation for his refusal to assist with public relations following Smiths Oscars incident with Chris Rock.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles on November 7, alleges intentional infliction of emotional distress. Salaam, who previously worked as Will Smiths assistant on Ali and as a production assistant on The Legend of Bagger Vance, asserts that Pinkett Smith and members of her entourage threatened him during an incident in 2021.
According to the complaint, during a private birthday party for Smith in Calabasas, Pinkett Smith warned Salaam that continuing to reveal her personal information could result in him "going missing or catching a bullet" and demanded he sign a non-disclosure agreement. Salaam claims that seven members of her entourage were present and that one of them followed him to his car while issuing further threats.
Salaam also states that he declined a request from actor Duane Martin to help manage PR after the Oscars altercation because his conscience would not allow him to participate in what he considered a deceptive cover-up. Following his refusal, he claims he was warned that Pinkett Smith might cause him "serious problems." Salaam alleges that after this, he became the target of a retaliatory campaign, which intensified when he began writing a memoir about his experiences with the couple.
The complaint further mentions Salaams 2023 public statement about witnessing a sexual encounter involving Smith and Martin, which both parties denied, prompting, according to Salaam, a coordinated media smear campaign led by Pinkett Smith. He specifically references her 2023 appearance on The Breakfast Club and her comments to TMZ as part of her efforts to discredit him, despite no formal lawsuit being filed.
Salaam asserts that Pinkett Smith and her associates attempted to intimidate, bribe, and suppress him, behavior he describes as "extreme and outrageous conduct." He claims the alleged actions have caused him financial losses, reputational harm, emotional trauma, physical health issues, and severe disruption of his personal and professional life.
He is seeking at least $3 million in special damages, along with general, exemplary, and punitive damages, and a public retraction of Pinkett Smiths statements.
