Woman Questions Buying Separate Gifts for Nine Nieces and Nephews
A woman is unsure if she is wrong for not wanting to buy individual Christmas presents for her nine nieces and nephews this year. She usually buys them one large, shared gift, but this year her sister requested that each child receive their own present.
The woman shared her story on Reddit's AITA forum, explaining that she and her sister are not very close. They have different lifestyles and personalities and havent met in person for around eight years, keeping in touch mainly through texts on holidays and birthdays.
While the woman does not have children, her sister has nine kids aged 2 to 16. After her sister had her fifth child, the woman began buying a single, more expensive Christmas gift for all the children to enjoy together. She felt this was more practical than buying nine smaller gifts, and her sister never objected.
This year, her sister called and explained that finances are tight and asked if the woman could buy each child an individual gift. Upon reviewing the children's Christmas lists, the woman was shocked by the prices, with most items exceeding $100 per child. She realized that fulfilling the lists would cost over $1,000, which she cannot afford, especially as she does not celebrate Christmas herself and has not met some of the children.
When she informed her sister that she could not spend that amount, her sister became upset and insisted on giving the children individual presents. They argued, and her sister eventually called her a "jerk" and hung up.
In the Reddit discussion, commenters largely supported the woman, noting that her sister should not expect someone else to cover the cost of Christmas for nine children. Suggestions included setting a budget-friendly limit per child or giving small gifts to avoid financial strain.
One commenter explained, "She chose to have nine kids. She should not expect someone else to carry the load at Christmas." Another emphasized, "Her financial issues are not your responsibility." Others highlighted that the sisters reaction reflected her own guilt over not being able to afford expensive gifts, rather than the womans refusal.
Several readers recommended giving modest gifts within her budget and including a card specifying the gift came from her, ensuring the gesture remains thoughtful without causing financial stress.
