York University awarded $17.8m for establishment of new School of Medicine

York University in Canada will receive C$25 million ($17.8 million) from York Region to support the launch of its upcoming School of Medicine, which is expected to welcome students in 2028. The funding will be allocated for the construction and development of the new facility, situated within the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct next to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.

This investment represents a significant step as the university strengthens collaboration with local doctors and partners in healthcare and technology, including Oak Valley Health, Mackenzie Health, the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI), and Southlake Health. The York Region contribution complements existing support from the Government of Ontario for the medical schools initial startup expenses. Additionally, the City of Vaughan has provided land for the campus, further facilitating its development.

The combined funding aims to improve healthcare system sustainability, expand access to primary care, address shortages of physicians, and advance medical education in the region. The School of Medicine will follow a community-focused primary care model, emphasizing patient-centered practice, teamwork among healthcare professionals, and equity. Its location in the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct will foster connections between clinical training, research, and community health services.
