Opinion: Trump is not worthy of a peace prize, not even FIFA's fake one

President Donald Trump should appreciate his FIFA Peace Prize, as it will likely be the only one he ever receives. Unsurprisingly, Trump was awarded FIFA's made-up "peace" prize, a token recognition designed solely to flatter the president's inflated ego. He was presented with an extravagant golden trophy, a medal that he eagerly wore, and a certificate to mark the farcical event.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised Trump's so-called "exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world" ahead of the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C. But what actions are being acknowledged here? Is it the killings of innocent fishermen, potentially illegal and even considered war crimes? The racist remarks targeting Somali people? The mistreatment and abuse of people of color in pursuit of an idealized vision of a racially "pure" America while advocating for reverse migration? Or perhaps its the cutbacks to vital aid for those in dire need? Should we continue?

Trump's divisive behavior has made him one of the most polarizing figures not only in the United States but across the globe. His words and actions have contributed to making the world a more dangerous, bitter, and unwelcoming place. He sees himself as a peace champion, but no credible organization would ever acknowledge him as such.

Then enters Infantino and FIFA. Under Infantino's leadership, FIFA has lost its last shred of moral integrity. He has aligned himself with autocrats and human rights violators while disregarding sponsors, the LGBTQ+ community, and even FIFAs own members. Infantino has made FIFA even more disreputable with his adoration for Trump.

Infantino is well aware of Trump's deep desire for a Nobel Peace Prize, a fact that the world is constantly reminded of as Trump brings it up at every opportunity. However, Infantino also understands that the chances of Trump winning over the Nobel committee are slimmer than the tiny island nation of Cape Verde winning the World Cup on its debut. The Nobel Prize selectors are not sycophants like Trump's cabinet members. They will not reward him for dubious peace deals and fragile agreements that fell apart almost immediately. They will not overlook his obsequiousness toward Vladimir Putin, who started the unprovoked war on Ukraine. Nor will they honor Trump for his attempts to dismantle American democracy, a system that has long served as an example of freedom and justice for over 200 years.
