DETROIT On Monday, two conservative political operatives received probation for their involvement in a scheme aimed at deterring Black voters in Detroit from using mail-in ballots during the 2020 presidential election. This marked the conclusion of a multistate investigation into thousands of robocalls.
Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman were accused of producing automated calls that falsely warned voters they could face harassment from police, debt collectors, or government vaccine authorities if they cast their votes by mail. The calls were directed at predominantly urban areas that lean Democratic.
A recorded message stated, Dont be finessed into giving your private information to the man.
In August, Wohl and Burkman entered no-contest pleas to charges including voter intimidation, conspiracy, and computer crimes after failed attempts to dismiss the case on free speech grounds. A Wayne County judge handed them one year of probation.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel described their actions as exploiting every racist dog whistle to prevent mail-in voting.
The pair also faced legal action in New York and Ohio over similar robocall campaigns. In Ohio, a 2022 court ruling required them to complete 500 hours of community service connected to voter registration. In New York, they resolved a lawsuit last year by agreeing to pay up to $1.25 million.
Defense lawyers emphasized that Wohl and Burkman were ready to move forward. I don't think hes going to be back in any court in the future, said Scott Grabel, Burkmans attorney, noting the offensive nature of the calls. Attorney William Amadeo added that he was pleased Wohl can put it behind him.
