Dec. 6 Adam Wolfe, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, is slowly recovering from a head injury sustained during an ambush near the White House on Nov. 26. Governor Patrick Morrisey provided an update on the 24-year-old service member, who remains hospitalized as a vigil is planned for him Friday evening at Musselman High School in Berkeley County, West Virginia.
"According to his parents, Adams head injury is gradually healing, and he is starting to appear more like his usual self," Morrisey said in an official statement.
"The family anticipates he will require acute care for another two to three weeks, but they are encouraged by his progress," the governor added. "We continue to ask all West Virginians and Americans to keep him in their thoughts and prayersthey are having a real impact."
Wolfe and fellow National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, 20, were shot while on duty near the West Farragut Metro Station, located roughly two blocks from the White House. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries on Thanksgiving Day. The suspected attacker, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and other related offenses.
Lakanwal allegedly ambushed the two Guardsmen, shooting them in the head with a .357 magnum revolver. He was interrupted while attempting to reload, at which point other nearby Guardsmen engaged him, eventually detaining him until emergency personnel arrived. Lakanwal remains hospitalized in critical condition and entered not guilty pleas remotely during his recent arraignment.
Lakanwal is originally from Afghanistan and previously served in an Afghan military unit that collaborated with the CIA before the U.S. withdrawal in 2021. He arrived in the United States in 2021 through a Biden administration program that resettled Afghans fleeing Taliban rule. Lakanwal and his family, including his wife and five children, settled in Bremerton, Washington, and he was granted asylum in April 2024.
