Democrat Mandela Barnes announces candidacy for Wisconsin governor

Former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, a Democrat, officially declared his candidacy for governor on Tuesday, entering a competitive Democratic primary to succeed outgoing Governor Tony Evers next year.

In his campaign launch video, Barnes criticized federal policies, stating, The harder you work, the more Washington ignores the challenges of everyday people. Billionaires get tax breaks while working families face rising costs. He further added, The Trump era has been defined by distractions and chaos, avoiding accountability at every turn.

Barnes emphasized his vision for the state, highlighting affordability, fair wages, and expanded vocational training as priorities. Wisconsin can advance only by rejecting Washington-style politics and focusing on practical solutions, he said.

Barnes held the position of lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023 under Evers, who announced in July that he would not pursue a third term. Before serving as lieutenant governor, Barnes completed two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly.

In 2022, Barnes ran for the U.S. Senate against Republican Ron Johnson, narrowly losing by one percentage point. During that campaign, Republicans criticized Barnes on crime and public safety issues, referencing past statements about eliminating U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and reallocating police funding. His campaign clarified that he did not support abolishing ICE or defunding law enforcement.

Other Democrats competing in the gubernatorial primary include Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, Assembly member Francesca Hong, State Senator Kelda Roys, and college student Zachary Roper. Republican candidates vying for their partys nomination include Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann, Representative Tom Tiffany, and medical service technician Andrew Manske.

The Wisconsin governors race is viewed as a crucial contest for Republicans. Political analysts at the Cook Political Report categorize the seat as a toss-up.
