Democratic Senator Mark Warner announces campaign for reelection

RICHMOND, Va. Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat representing Virginia, officially declared his intention to seek reelection on Tuesday, signaling the start of a pivotal campaign in a closely divided Senate.

In his announcement, Warner emphasized his focus on addressing the nations economic challenges, highlighting the effects of artificial intelligence on employment. We need a clear vision and strong leadership to navigate these times, Warner stated. Thats why I am running again for the United States Senate.

Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, while Warners seat is considered securely Democratic according to the Cook Political Report. Warner, who co-founded the company that evolved into Nextel, served as Virginias governor from 2002 to 2006 and was first elected to the Senate in 2008. He now serves as vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Warner referenced his business background in presenting himself as equipped to tackle the challenges posed by AI. This is a moment that requires bold ideas, he said. Tech companies that automate jobs should contribute to the solutions. We need universal healthcare and major reforms in housing and childcare.

On the Republican side, State Senator Bryce Reeves has already announced his candidacy for Warners seat. Reeves, an Army veteran and former law enforcement officer, has been serving in the Virginia Senate for more than ten years.

Virginias other senator, Democrat Tim Kaine, who was reelected in 2024, will not be up for reelection in 2026.
