Florida lawmakers urge Trump to oppose drilling on the western coast of the state

On Thursday, Florida's full congressional delegation appealed to President Donald Trump to exclude the state from plans to increase oil and gas drilling along new coastal areas. Lawmakers emphasized that such drilling could pose serious risks to Floridas military operations and tourism sector.

Significance

The appeal, sent by Senators Rick Scott and Ashley Moody along with all 28 members of the House from Florida, represented a rare bipartisan challenge to the president's agenda, given that the majority of the state's congressional members are Republicans.

"The potential dangers of offshore drilling far exceed any immediate economic benefits," the lawmakers stated in their letter.

Economic and Military Impact

The letter highlighted that over 50,000 jobs in the Florida Panhandle are connected to military installations tied to the Gulf Test Range, a large area in the Gulf of Mexico used for advanced weapons testing and air combat training. Expanding drilling in these waters could interfere with these critical military operations.

Floridas beaches also contribute significantly to the economy, generating $127.7 billion annually in tourism revenue and supporting 2.1 million jobs.

Federal Proposal and Local Opposition

The Interior Department recently proposed allowing future oil and gas leases in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, a region long protected from energy development due to its use for military exercises. Florida leaders, including Governor Ron DeSantis, have consistently opposed these changes.

Notably, President Trumps Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, is located on the state's eastern side. The White House has not yet provided a response to the lawmakers letter.
