A federal grand jury in Virginia has opted not to pursue new charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James, sources familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported. This decision marks another setback for the Trump administration in its efforts to initiate criminal cases against political opponents.
The proposed indictment concerned allegations that James had falsified mortgage documents tied to a property in the Norfolk, Virginia area. This is the second recent attempt to bring legal action against her that has failed.
Previously, U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie dismissed the case, along with separate charges against former FBI Director James Comey, citing the illegal appointment of the lead prosecutor who had been personally selected by former President Trump to handle both cases.
The Justice Department may consider pursuing another attempt to indict James in the future.
