Representative Mike Turner (R-Ohio) expressed on Sunday that the White House ought to be deeply concerned following the leak of a call involving special envoy Steve Witkoff and a senior Russian official. Speaking to CBS News Nancy Cordes on Face the Nation, Turner remarked, You cannot judge a full negotiation based on a single excerpt, but it is crucial that, when opportunities arise, our cautionary and concerned perspectives are communicated.
Turner further highlighted the troubling nature of prioritizing Russian President Vladimir Putins voice over Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskys in such discussions. The way Putins input was placed before Zelenskys is alarming. The White House should be alert to any attempts to elevate Putin in discussions, as the sovereignty and security of Ukraine must remain paramount. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized this this morning, and it should remain our central focus, Turner added.
Following the leak of the call with the Russian official, President Trump defended Witkoff, who has faced criticism from supporters of Ukraine. Critics argue that Witkoffs actions during the call appeared aimed at limiting U.S. support for Kyiv while facilitating a deal favoring Russian interests.
On Tuesday, Trump supported Witkoffs conversation with Russian aide Yuri Ushakov, which sought to advise the Kremlin on approaching Putin regarding a potential peace agreement. This is standard procedure. He must convince Ukraine and then guide Ukraines approach to Russia. Thats the role of a dealmaker, Trump told reporters.
Throughout the early months of his second term, Trump and his administration have pursued efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine, though results have been limited. The president recently met separately with both Zelensky and Putin in the United States.
The Hill has contacted the White House for comment.
