A recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) initiative in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, is set to focus on undocumented Somali immigrants, according to a federal official who spoke to CNN. The New York Times first reported the operation, citing internal documents and an anonymous source.
The announcement comes amid President Donald Trumps recent statements criticizing Somali immigrants. During a Cabinet meeting, Trump labeled the Somali community and Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar as undesirable and stated that they should return to their countries of origin. He described Somalia as a nation with no laws, no water, no military and said, We do not want them in our country.
This rhetoric marks an intensification of the presidents focus on the Somali population, particularly in Minneapolis. Despite linking recent national security concerns to Somali residents, the individual involved in last weeks Washington, D.C., National Guard shooting was Afghan, not Somali. Somalia is among 19 countries affected by Trumps broad travel ban, which imposes various restrictions due to governance and security concerns.
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin declined to comment on potential operations, stating the agency does not discuss future or potential operations.
Local officials in the Twin Cities responded with concern. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey emphasized solidarity with the Somali community, affirming, Minneapolis is proud to host the largest Somali community in the United States. He also confirmed that city police would not take part in immigration enforcement actions. Similarly, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter criticized the federal intervention, noting it could cause unnecessary disruption and stress for residents.
Minneapolis City Council member Jamal Osman, a Somali immigrant, reassured the community, stating, We have faced fear before, and we will not let it divide us. The city of Minneapolis stands with you.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the operation a PR stunt, emphasizing that targeted immigration enforcement is not a solution to broader societal issues. He welcomed support in crime investigation but condemned indiscriminate action against immigrants.
Local authorities continue to provide resources and legal guidance to ensure the Somali community understands their rights amid federal enforcement efforts.
