Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has voiced concerns that Donald Trumps presidency is rapidly losing momentum as voters grow increasingly frustrated with him and his administrations missteps. Speaking on The Daily Beast Podcast, the 81-year-old political consultant said, The powers slipping away from Trump by the minute. You can sense it draining out.
A Gallup poll released on Friday highlighted this decline, showing Trumps approval rating at just 36 percentthe lowest of his second term according to the pollster. Carville told host Joanna Coles that public sentiment has turned sharply against Trump, with voters holding the 79-year-old president responsible for economic struggles.
Compounding the situation, Carville noted that a series of scandals within Trumps cabinet has fostered a perception of disorder surrounding the administration. He described the current political climate as reminiscent of revolutionary upheaval, emphasizing the growing dissatisfaction among Americans.
I dont see any path to improvement for them, said Carville, the strategist behind Bill Clintons 1992 campaign. He highlighted upcoming healthcare premium increases affecting over 20 million Americans due to the GOPs decision not to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies. Given these disastrous numbers, its hard to imagine the presidency achieving anything meaningful at this stage, he added.
Carville predicts that Democrats could leverage Trumps missteps to secure victories in the 2026 midterms, leaving the president with diminished influence. He is likely to face both a Democratic House and potentially a Democratic Senate, Carville stated, referencing the breadth and significance of Democratic wins across the nation.
In a recent New York Times opinion piece, Carville urged Democrats to embrace a platform centered on economic populism to address widespread financial struggles. Even at 81, I can see that the party must champion a bold economic agenda, the most populist since the Great Depression, he wrote. He criticized Trump for failing to fulfill promises to curb inflation and make everyday life more affordable, while overseeing a volatile job market and harmful trade policies.
Carville also criticized Trumps focus on personal enrichment and lavish White House projects, including extravagant decorations and a $300 million ballroom funded by the president and his wealthy associates.
Carville elaborated on the broader social impact of Trumps policies, warning that economic inequality is fueling frustration among younger generations. Young people see no path to homeownership or education affordability, while older savers hold the bulk of wealth. This is a recipe for unrest, he said, calling for measures to address these disparities before tensions escalate.
The White House has not responded to requests for comment. The Daily Beast Podcast releases new episodes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays on YouTube and other podcast platforms.
