In this weeks edition of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart targeted Donald Trump over his recent immigration measures, following the November 26 attack in Washington, DC, where an Afghan national shot two National Guard members. In response, the U.S. temporarily suspended immigration from Afghanistan. Trump also indicated he would review green card approvals for immigrants from 19 countries.
Stewart commented, This terrible act was committed by one person who belonged to a group of Afghans brought here because they risked their lives assisting the United States during the Afghanistan intervention. Which, naturally, means
He then showed a clip of Trump discussing his decision to halt asylum applications, where the president described the alleged shooter as part of people that shouldnt be in our country, also including Somalians among others.
Did you just lump Somalia with Afghanistan? Stewart quipped. So because of one Afghan, all Afghans and Somalians are now suspect?
Another clip featured Trump at Mar-a-Lago, when asked what Somalians had to do with the National Guard shooting. Trump replied, Nothing, but Somalians have caused a lot of trouble.
Stewart remarked, They had nothing to do with it, just reminded him of other groups he dislikes. So now our immigration policy seems to be: if one person from your group messes up, everyone is punished.
Later, Stewart questioned who Trump wants to admit into the U.S. A sound bite from Trump revealed his preference for highly skilled individuals: I also like very competent people coming into our country Matres d, wine experts, even waiters, high-quality waiters. You got to get the best people.
Stewart added, So Somalians arent welcome unless they are also sommeliers. My point is, strict standards are acceptable, but people from less favored countries are treated not as individuals but as part of a suspicious collective. If one person fails, the whole group is condemned.
