On Monday, Melania Trump revealed the Christmas decorations at the White House, prompting social media users to reflect on past events. The theme for this year's White House Christmas, the first under the Trump family since 2020, is "Home Is Where the Heart Is." The design also pays tribute to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States.
The First Lady shared a glimpse of the decorations in a promotional video, emphasizing a message of love and home: "This Christmas, lets celebrate the love we hold within ourselves and share it with the world around us. After all, wherever we are, we can create a home filled with endless possibilities."
While Melania highlighted the historical nod to 1776, many online users recalled a different moment from 2018. An audio recording from July 2018, shared by her former aide Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, captured Melania expressing frustration when asked about children separated from their families, stating she wanted to focus on Christmas planning. She also voiced her displeasure about handling White House holiday decorations, famously saying, "Who gives a **** about Christmas stuff and decoration?"
Despite apparent changes in her attitude over the years, social media quickly resurfaced her earlier remarks. Users posted reactions highlighting the contrast between past complaints and the current festive display.
Her 2018 remark was not the only controversy surrounding her holiday decorating. In 2017, she decorated the East Wing with stark white branches, which led to online memes and horror-movie comparisons. The following year, her crimson tree display was described as a "nightmare forest" reminiscent of costumes in The Handmaids Tale. Since then, the East Wing has been modified to accommodate President Donald Trumps ballroom.
Despite previous criticism, Melania Trumps current White House decorations follow the theme of celebrating home and heart, with nods to both national history and holiday tradition.
