Dec. 1 (UPI) -- New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, reported multiple bomb threats directed at his offices Monday morning, amid a rise in threats against U.S. lawmakers.
"Earlier today, New York law enforcement informed me of several bomb threats targeting my offices in Rochester, Binghamton, and Long Island," Schumer stated during a Senate floor address. The warnings were sent via email, with the subject line reading "MAGA," referencing the Make America Great Again movement initiated by former President Donald Trump.
Schumer noted that the emails falsely alleged that the 2020 presidential election, which Trump lost to Joe Biden, had been manipulated. Local and federal authorities responded promptly, and security sweeps were underway at his offices as he spoke. "Fortunately, everyone is safe," Schumer said, expressing his appreciation for law enforcement efforts. "As I have repeatedly emphasized, violent threats have no place in our political system. No public official, staff member, constituent, or citizen should face danger for simply performing their duties."
The warnings come amid escalating political tensions in the U.S., which have included attacks on high-profile figures. In 2022, David DePape intruded into the home of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and assaulted her husband, Paul Pelosi. Trump survived two assassination attempts in 2024, one leaving him with a gunshot wound to the ear. Earlier this year, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence was damaged in an arson attack; two Minnesota Democratic state representatives were shot, one fatally; and conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September.
"The threats aimed at Senator Schumers offices are appalling," said Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y. "Disagreement is a natural part of democracy, but violence and intimidation are unacceptable. This is not a partisan issueit affects everyone, and both parties must take responsibility to prevent it."
