Dec. 1 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump announced that he has invited the families of two National Guard members who were shot last week to the White House. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump confirmed that he has personally communicated with the families and extended a formal invitation.
"I have spoken to both families," Trump said. "They are devastated."
The victims, U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, both serving in the West Virginia National Guard, were injured while patrolling in Washington, D.C., as part of Trump's crime and immigration enforcement efforts. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, while Wolfe remains in critical condition.
Trump told reporters that Wolfe is "fighting for his life" and emphasized that the invitation to the White House remains open "when you are ready."
"We will honor Sarah," he said. "And similarly, we will honor Andrew, whether he recovers or not."
Trump also described Wolfe's parents as "great" and "highly religious," noting that they are praying and requesting prayers for their son. "He has a chance to make it," Trump added.
The suspected shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an Afghan national who U.S. officials say assisted the CIA in tracking high-value Taliban targets, has been charged in connection with the attack. Trump referred to Lakanwal as an "animal" and criticized the previous Biden administration for allowing him entry into the United States.
In response to the shooting, Trump announced plans to implement an indefinite pause on migration from what he described as "third-world countries." Additionally, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has temporarily suspended all asylum applications filed within the United States.
