Since the start of his second term, President Donald Trump has consistently focused on Europe. In the recently released National Security Strategy, unveiled early Friday, Trump escalated his critique, portraying Europe as a continent burdened by excessive regulations, censorship, and a lack of "self-confidence," warning that immigration trends could lead to "civilizational erasure."
The document formalizes months of U.S. criticism, accusing European nations of exploiting American generosity and failing to shape their own future. This strategy marks a clear shift from prior U.S. approaches and addresses European institutions that allegedly threaten political freedom and national sovereignty, immigration policies, restrictions on free speech, declining birth rates, and erosion of national identity.
"If current patterns persist, Europe could look dramatically different within 20 years," the strategy states. It also notes that while many Europeans desire peace, governmental actions often undermine democratic processes, preventing that wish from influencing policy.
European leaders responded quickly. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that Germany does not require "outside advice," while France's Valerie Hayer, head of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament, labeled the strategy as "unacceptable and dangerous."
Former U.S. State Department advisor Evan Feigenbaum highlighted that the section on Europe is the most striking in the document, describing it as "inherently confrontational" and opposing the broader European project. The strategy explicitly supports fostering resistance to Europe's current trajectory within its own nations.
Earlier, Vice President JD Vance drew criticism in Europe by claiming that freedom of expression is diminishing on the continent and aligning with far-right parties such as Germany's AfD.
The strategy emphasizes the importance of nation-states and signals a desire for a fundamentally different European landscape. Kristine Berzina, senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund, noted that challenging European governments' legitimacy represents "significant political attacks," even as the Trump administration expresses intent to strengthen European security amid the Ukraine conflict.
The strategy specifically criticizes censorship and political suppression in Europe, reflecting concerns over efforts to limit far-right influence. While it does not single out particular parties, it underscores the Trump administration's aim to influence European policies, particularly regarding immigration. Trump has also shown support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who opposes immigration and LGBTQ rights.
