Trump's Top Official Encourages Crowd to Cheer Loudly During National Telecast of Christmas Tree Ceremony

Doug Burgum, Secretary of the Interior under President Donald Trump, energized attendees an hour before the presidents appearance by instructing them to cheer enthusiastically when the "national telecast" of the Christmas tree lighting commenced.

The 103rd National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony took place on December 4, 2025, at the Ellipse in Presidents Park near the White House. While pool cameras covered the event live, the official broadcast was planned for Great American Family on Friday, December 5, at 8 p.m. ET.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived at the Ellipse for the ceremony, marking Trumps first visit to the site since the rally on January 6, 2021.

Approximately one hour before the presidents speech, Burgum addressed the crowd, emphasizing their important role in cheering for the televised audience. He said:

On behalf of President Trump and First Lady Melania, thank you for being here tonight. Youve come out, bundled up, to help officially start the Christmas season. Give yourselves a round of applause. You have an important job to show your enthusiasm as the national broadcast begins. Behind the scenes, top recording artists and even Santa Claus are waiting, eager to see your energy. As a North Dakotan, I know the best way to stay warm outdoors is with lots of cheering and clapping! Lets hear your best now. Are you ready for the show? Excellent. Merry Christmas, and may the spirit of the season guide us all. God bless the United States.

The ceremony included performances from national recording artists and featured the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree, with the live audience actively participating in the broadcast atmosphere.
