UAE marks its 54th anniversary while pushing for progress in ceasefire and Gaza plan

The United Arab Emirates celebrated its 54th National Day on December 2, highlighting its ongoing humanitarian efforts in Gaza and its support for a ceasefire plan. The festivities emphasized the UAE's commitment to aiding civilians affected by the conflict, even as the country has maintained a relatively quiet diplomatic stance.

UAE media stressed Gaza's significance to Abu Dhabi, noting that the country has quietly provided substantial assistance. According to Al-Ain, the UAE has contributed more than 44% of all international aid to Gaza, helping evacuate over 3,000 injured individuals and delivering more than 100,000 tons of supplies.

The UAE's National Day celebrations are described as bringing joy to Gaza, with humanitarian initiatives designed to honor the occasion. One notable program, called the "Thawb of Joy," provides traditional garments and support to newlyweds in Gaza, helping them celebrate life amid ongoing hardships. From 577 applicants, dozens of couples were selected to receive tents and relief packages, reflecting the UAEs ongoing commitment to the region.

Humanitarian efforts are organized under the Emirates Red Crescent, which has played a pivotal role in Gaza since the start of the conflict. Dr. Hamdan Musallam Al Mazrouei, chairman of the ERC, emphasized that humanitarian work is central to the UAEs identity, with the country being one of the largest global donors relative to its national income. He noted that the ERC serves as a national voice for humanitarian values, extending aid without discrimination.

UAE assistance in Gaza began with the Noble Knight operations two years ago, delivering aid via Egypt and air drops. The timing of this years Union Day coincides with the second anniversary of Operation Noble Knight 3, the largest UAE relief operation for Gaza, launched on November 5, 2023. Following the US-brokered ceasefire in October, the UAE dispatched a humanitarian ship carrying 7,200 tonnes of supplies, including food, shelter materials, medical supplies, and water tanks.

These initiatives, directed by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, include ongoing convoys delivering essential goods, medical equipment, winter clothing, and provisions for women and children. The UAE has also provided ambulances, medical tents, water tankers, and field bakeries, alongside infrastructure projects like a 7.5-kilometer desalinated water pipeline serving over 600,000 people.

UAE state media highlighted that all aid operations are managed efficiently from the logistics center in Al-Arish, ensuring timely and organized delivery. The country continues to advocate for progress on the ceasefire plan, expressing concern about the future of Gaza and the potential for further division and hardship if aid and diplomatic solutions do not advance in 2026.
