Starting a season 7-1 typically signals a team is playoff-bound, yet the Indianapolis Colts now face uncertainty. Despite still having a solid chance to qualify, their postseason berth is no longer assured.
The Colts have dropped three of their last four contests, tying for first in the AFC South with the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the surging Houston Texans trail by just one game. In the AFC wild-card picture, three teams sit at 8-4, one at 7-5, and two at 6-6, including the Chiefs, leaving the Colts at risk despite their strong start.
The main concern isn't only the losses but the teams performance in those games. After averaging 385.3 yards per game over the first eight matches, the offense has slipped to 301.3 yards per game during the three recent defeats. Scoring has dropped from 33.8 points per game to just 18.7.
Even their Week 10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, with 519 yards and 31 points, required overtime to overcome a 4-8 opponent. Quarterback Daniel Jones, once praised for his breakout form, is reportedly playing through a fractured fibula, affecting his effectiveness. Running back Jonathan Taylor, previously an MVP contender, has managed only 188 rushing yards over the last three losses. Overall, the offense lacks its early-season sharpness.
Defensive challenges add to the Colts struggles. Injuries to key players like DeForest Buckner and cornerback Sauce Gardner have weakened the teams defensive unit. Without an offensive resurgence, further losses are likely.
The Colts could still recover, win the division, and erase memories of this slump, but there's also a real chance that the Jaguars, Texans, or both surpass them, marking the 7-1 start as squandered and possibly prompting major changes in Indianapolis.
Panic Level: Moderate
The Colts reached 7-1 through skill, not luck, but recent struggles have raised concerns. Daniel Jones and the team now share first place in the AFC South, yet uncertainty looms.
Ravens Face Midseason Regression
The Baltimore Ravens, after a five-game win streak following a 1-5 start, now sit at 6-6. Wins against weaker opponents masked underlying issues, and a recent loss to the Bengals highlighted their limitations. Defensive lapses and Lamar Jacksons hamstring recovery continue to pose challenges, diminishing Super Bowl expectations while leaving the AFC North title still plausible but uncertain.
Cardinals Injury Woes
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray remains on injured reserve, missing opportunities previously hinted at by coach Jonathan Gannon. Jacoby Brissett has started in his place, but Murrays uncertain status raises questions about the teams future strategy and direction.
Rookie Running Back Disappointment: Jeanty
Las Vegas Raiders rookie running back Jeanty, the sixth overall pick, has struggled during his first season. Averaging under 3.2 yards per carry in five straight games and ranking near the bottom among peers, Jeantys production falls short of expectations. While the offensive line and coordinator issues contribute, this season remains a tough start for a highly regarded prospect.
Panic Level: Cautious Optimism
Patience is recommended for teams and players facing setbacks, but recent performance drops serve as a reminder that early success is no guarantee of season-long dominance.
